We felt that this would effectively put across the idea that the protagonist is quite simple in terms of means and that Boxing is how he gets away from the drudgery of living in the city. It also helps with building the audiences relationship with the character. They would think him a strong person since he is able to overcome obstacles and still work to achieve his dream, helping his family in the process.
